Gangsta Gibbs was in town on Tuesday night, and of course Villain Radio was in tha buildin’ capturin’ some shit for all to see. I’;; be uploading flicks throughout the weekend. This first one is Freddie performing “Slammin” off of Str8 Killa No Filla. The sound quality isn’t the best, but what do you expect, i was onstage next to a speaker, but enjoy……….
2009 is supposed to be the year when Hip Hop returns to the forefront of the music industry with releases by Big Name Artists such as: Eminem, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip, 50 Cent & Dr. Dre, just to name a few. In this ever growing field of music releases is a lone stand out by Gary, Indiana native Freddie Gibbs. The album that I am speaking of is titled, “The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs”. What the industry would label a “mixtape“, it’s packed with all star production by Just Blaze, J.R. Rotem, Polow The Don, Josh The Goon, Megahertz, Needlz, Devin The Dude, Finger Roll, and Tycoon. I would categorize this more along the lines as a “street album”. Sure there are a few recycled “commercial” beats, but with these Freddie puts his own twist to the instrumentals and creates his own song making you forget about the originals that preceded them. Far from a rookie in the game, Mr. Gibbs has been around the block and back again. Discovered by Indiana music pioneer Finger Roll, Freddie was brought to national prominence by Joe “3H” Weinberger (Kanye West, Daddy Yankee, The Knux, Soulja Boy Tellem), and quickly signed by Interscope Records where he sat on the shelf due to the fact that the label didn’t know what to do with him. Unlike most shelved rappers Freddie stayed workin’, grindin’ in the studio with the aforementioned producers recording multiple songs with them, and basically sittin’ on them while Interscope dicked around. That is until now. Released in June, (I originally got it in May, yea I know I’m slackin’) “The Miseducation” has “Gangsta Gibbs” bobbin’, and weavin’ with ease over these beats with his own unique style that has taken cues from all the greats before him. He paints pictures with his words that have you experiencing life in the “Steel City”, a place that I can go on and on about with the trials and tribulations of also growing up in a decaying steel town. The album is filled with gems and Freddie always makes it a point that you know he’s from “The G”. Take a listen to the intro track here, titled, “G.I. Pride”, and was produced by none other then Just Blaze:
From there Gibbs murders beat by Polow Tha Don titled, “What It B Like” in which he also did a video for which he shot in Gary, check it out:
Gibbs then goes out on a limb by doin’ his own take on Pac’s “Bury Me A G” beat with the apt titled, “From the G”. It’s not your “typical” mixtape track, he creates his own product with it, and does Pac justice. There was also a video shot for this one, again it was filmed in Gary also, check it out:
The Baby Faced Killa then moves on to a Megahertz produced track, “Keep It Pimpin’”. The song isn’t “new” to longtime fans. There’s also a remix with Ray Cash floatin’ around, but there is a new 3rd verse that warrants the placement on this project. The next joint is the stand out track off the album, it is a JR Rotem produced joint called, “Neverending Cycle”, which is another vivid painted tale of street life. Then Freddie goes into story tellin’ mode with a vengeance on the next cut, “Queen (Luv U 2 Death) “. The track, produced by one of the West Coast’s hottest new producers, Josh The Goon has Freddie tellin’ a tale bout a “bitch” who he falls for, but sets him up, and he gets ganked for some cash and some work by someone who he ain’t cool with in the first place. Take a listen tracks and judge for yourself:
I can sit here and go thru each and every track, but that’s something you should do for yourself. This is arguably the BEST album put out this year, with Eminem’s, “Relapse” comin’ in at a solid #2. I bet Interscope is kickin’ themselves in the ass right about now. This is mos definitely worth the time and blank CD, or iPod transfer time…TRUST ME. Go ahead and please your ear drums here’s the link:
Mr. Gibbs isn’t done there either folks. He’s finishing up “midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik”. He’s doin’ that with DJ Skee I believe, and again it’ll be packed with all star production check this leak here, “Boxframe Cadillac Muzik” produced by JR Rotem:
Then there’s the project with Josh The Goon titled, “Do The Wrong Thing” all which will be hittin’ us shortly I’m told. Ask Freddie about his label situation and he laugh’s and says, “what label?”. Yes, he is the “Game’s” #1 free agent, but you don’t need a Major Label to be able to play ball anymore, and the ball’s in his court now.
